What Are Digital X-Rays

A clearer picture of your oral health

When it comes to providing the highest quality dental care, Smile Beautiful constantly seeks out the latest techniques and technologies. One of the areas where we continue to make great strides is replacing traditional radiography with digital X-rays.

Instead of film that must be chemically developed, a digital sensor captures the image and sends it straight to a screen. Your dentist can zoom, adjust contrast, and review the image with you chairside within seconds of taking it.

By offering digital X-ray technology, our dentists are able to diagnose earlier, more accurately, and with much less risk than offices still using traditional film.

Why Digital Imaging

Better images, lower risk

Digital radiography improves nearly every part of the diagnostic process for you and for us.

Increased Safety

Digital X-rays reduce radiation exposure by 70 to 80 percent — especially important for pregnant patients and those already managing illness.

Reduced Risk

We can spot issues that need treatment far less invasively, so we know exactly what to target in any follow-up procedure.

Higher Quality

Superior, more detailed images can be magnified and enhanced without sacrificing clarity, which aids early diagnosis.

More Convenience

No chemical developing. Images appear instantly and your files are accessible at any time from any treatment room.

Faster Treatment

More accurate diagnosis means treatment can be determined and applied more quickly, saving you pain and cost later.

Easy to Share

Digital files transfer cleanly to specialists and insurers, and they never degrade or get misplaced like film.

The Process

What a digital X-ray visit looks like

  1. 1

    Protective Apron

We place a lead apron and thyroid collar over you as a standard precaution.

  2. 2

    Sensor Placement

A small digital sensor is positioned in your mouth. It is more comfortable than older film packets.

  3. 3

    Capture

The exposure lasts a fraction of a second. Most full series take only a few minutes.

  4. 4

    Instant Review

Images appear immediately on screen so we can magnify and examine any area of concern.

  5. 5

    Discuss Findings

We walk you through exactly what we see on the screen and explain your options.

When X-Rays Are Used

Imaging tailored to your needs

How often you need X-rays depends on your age, oral health history, and current risk of decay — not on a fixed schedule. Patients with healthy teeth and no symptoms need them far less often than those managing active disease.

If you have recent X-rays from a previous dentist, we are happy to request them so we do not repeat imaging unnecessarily.

Common Questions

Everything you want to know

Considering Digital Dental X-Rays? Here are answers to the questions we hear most often.

Very little. Digital sensors need 70 to 80 percent less radiation than traditional film, and a routine set of bitewings delivers a dose comparable to what you receive naturally from the environment over a normal day.
