Every year our doctors pack up their instruments and travel to communities where a toothache has nowhere to go. These missions are funded almost entirely by the generosity of Smile Beautiful patients.

Why We Go
Paying it forward
Dr. Daniel Jones and his wife are originally from Brazil, and much of what drives our volunteer work comes from that connection. In the remote communities along the Amazon River, a cavity that would be a routine filling here can turn into an infection, a lost tooth, or weeks of pain — simply because there is no dentist within reach.
So our doctors go to them. They travel by boat with organizations like Universidade do Amor, setting up clinics in villages that see a dental professional once a year at best. They perform exams and treatment on the spot and leave behind toothbrushes, toothpaste, and floss so families can keep up the work after the boat leaves.
None of it would be possible without our patients. The supplies our doctors carry into the Amazon are donated right here in Southwest DC — by the same people who sit in our chairs every six months.
How It Works
A mission built on small contributions
There is no foundation or grant behind these trips. They run on donated supplies, volunteered time, and doctors who pay their own way.
Our doctors volunteer their time
Dr. Dan and Dr. JJ take unpaid leave and cover their own travel so that every donated dollar goes toward care rather than logistics.
Family comes along
Dr. Dan has brought his son Rafa and his daughter Gabi on these trips, passing the habit of service down to the next generation.
