Root Canal Treatment in Washington, DC
Relieve the pain, save the tooth
A root canal is a last-chance procedure to save a severely decayed or infected tooth. Root canals are highly successful at rescuing teeth that would otherwise be lost — and with our emphasis on painless dentistry, the treatment relieves far more discomfort than it causes.

What Is a Root Canal
Treating infection at the source
The name refers to the area inside the tooth where the nerve and pulp are located — often the source of growing decay and pain. The nerve and pulp must be removed if the rest of the tooth is to be saved.
The nerve is not essential to ongoing tooth function; it mostly detects temperature and pressure. But once infected, it becomes a liability that can lead to swelling, drainage, and bone loss if not addressed. In root canal treatment, also called endodontic therapy, we create a small opening in the crown of the tooth, clean out the pulp and nerve, then fill and seal the space to prevent further decay.
Once the root canal is complete, the tooth receives a cap or filling that entirely conceals the work, so your smile keeps its full, healthy appearance. It is not uncommon for the tooth or surrounding gums to feel sensitive for a few days, but this should not stop you from returning to your daily routine immediately after treatment.

Why Root Canal Therapy
Keeping your own tooth is worth it
Root canal treatment retains full tooth functionality while minimizing ongoing care and cost.
Ends the Pain
Removing the infected nerve eliminates the throbbing ache that brought you in.
Saves the Natural Tooth
Nothing replaces a natural tooth as well as the tooth itself, root and all.
Stops the Infection Spreading
Untreated pulp infection can lead to abscess, swelling, and loss of surrounding bone.
Normal Chewing Restored
Once sealed and crowned, the tooth handles biting and chewing just as before.
Cost-Effective Long Term
Treating and crowning a tooth is usually less involved than extraction plus an implant or bridge.
Invisible Result
A crown or filling conceals the access point entirely — no one can tell the work was done.
The Process
What happens during treatment
- 1
Diagnosis & X-Ray
We test the tooth and image the root to confirm the pulp is infected and map the canal anatomy.
- 2
Numb & Isolate
The area is thoroughly anesthetized and isolated so the tooth stays clean and dry throughout.
- 3
Clean the Canals
We open the crown, remove the infected pulp and nerve, then disinfect and shape the canals.
- 4
Fill & Seal
The empty canals are filled and sealed to prevent bacteria from re-entering the tooth.
- 5
Restore with a Crown
A crown or filling rebuilds the tooth so it can withstand normal chewing forces again.

If you exhibit any or all of the symptoms below, it would be wise to contact us to discuss whether root canal treatment is your best solution. Some infected teeth cause no pain at all and are only found on an X-ray.
Basic, ongoing dental hygiene and regular exams are an easy and affordable way to prevent a root canal from ever being necessary in the first place.
Pain Under Pressure
Extreme pain and sensitivity while chewing or putting pressure on the tooth.
Temperature Sensitivity
Heightened, lingering sensitivity to both hot and cold, often radiating toward the ear.
Discoloration
Internal darkening of the tooth, indicating the pulp inside has died.
A Pimple on the Gums
A recurring bump near the tooth, which may indicate an abscess, plus gum swelling and tenderness.
