What Counts as an Emergency
When you should not wait
A dental emergency is any situation involving severe pain, active bleeding, trauma to a tooth, or an infection that is spreading. The common thread is that delay makes things worse — often turning a treatable problem into one that costs a tooth.
Timing genuinely matters. A tooth that has been completely knocked out has the best chance of being saved if it is reimplanted within about thirty minutes. An abscess left untreated can spread infection into surrounding tissue and become a serious medical problem. A cracked tooth exposed to bacteria may need a root canal that prompt treatment could have avoided.
If you are unsure whether what you are experiencing qualifies, call us. We would far rather answer a question over the phone than have you spend a weekend in pain, or lose a tooth that could have been saved. Describing your symptoms lets us tell you what to do right now and how quickly you need to be seen.

How We Help
Relief first, then a real solution
Our priority in an emergency is getting you out of pain, then diagnosing the underlying cause so the problem does not return.
Same-day appointments
We reserve time for urgent cases. Call and describe what is happening and we will get you in as quickly as possible.
Immediate pain management
Stopping the pain comes first. We treat the source rather than sending you home with a prescription and no plan.
Focused on saving the tooth
Extraction is a last resort. When a tooth can be preserved with prompt treatment, that is always our aim.
Accurate diagnosis
Digital X-rays quickly reveal what is happening below the surface — infection, fracture, or bone involvement.
Guidance before you arrive
What you do in the first minutes matters. We tell you how to handle a knocked-out tooth or control bleeding on the phone.
Calm, gentle treatment
Emergencies are stressful. Dr. Jones is known for a reassuring manner that makes an anxious situation manageable.
What to Expect
From your call to relief
- 1
Call us immediately
Phone (202) 554-5011 and describe your symptoms. We will advise you on immediate first aid and schedule you as soon as possible.
- 2
First aid before you arrive
For a knocked-out tooth, hold it by the crown, rinse gently, and keep it in milk or saliva. For bleeding, apply firm gauze pressure. For swelling, use a cold compress.
- 3
Rapid assessment
On arrival we examine the area and take digital X-rays as needed to determine exactly what is wrong and how urgent it is.
- 4
Immediate treatment
We address the pain and stabilize the problem — reimplanting a tooth, draining an abscess, placing a temporary restoration, or beginning root canal therapy.
- 5
Definitive follow-up
Once you are comfortable, we plan the permanent repair, whether that is a crown, a completed root canal, or an implant.
Common Emergencies
Situations we treat urgently
The following all warrant a same-day call. If you are experiencing any of them, do not wait to see whether it improves on its own.
One important exception: if you have suffered a serious facial injury, a suspected broken jaw, or swelling that is affecting your breathing or ability to swallow, go to a hospital emergency room first. Those situations need medical attention beyond what a dental office can provide, and we will coordinate your dental care afterward.
Severe or persistent toothache
Especially with swelling or fever, which often signals infection requiring prompt treatment.
Knocked-out tooth
The most time-critical emergency. Keep the tooth moist and call immediately — the window is roughly thirty minutes.
Cracked or broken tooth
Exposed inner tooth structure invites bacteria and can quickly progress to needing a root canal.
Lost crown or filling
Leaves the underlying tooth vulnerable to decay, fracture, and considerable sensitivity.
Abscess or facial swelling
A spreading infection is a genuine medical concern, not just a dental one. Call right away.
Uncontrolled bleeding
Bleeding from the gums or a socket that will not stop with sustained pressure needs immediate evaluation.
Common Questions
Everything you want to know
Considering Emergency Dental Care? Here are answers to the questions we hear most often.
Act fast — you have roughly thirty minutes for the best chance of saving it. Pick the tooth up by the crown, never the root. Rinse it gently with water without scrubbing. If you can, place it back in the socket and hold it there. Otherwise keep it in milk or your own saliva, and call us immediately.
